I recently listened to Laslo Montgomery's The Chinese History Podcast of June 29,2021, "Interview with Larry Feign and the Pirate Queen Zheng Yi Sao". Mr. Feign's new novel, "The Flower Boat Girl", brought to life the true story of an abandoned girl from the lowest ranks of society, the "water people", who survived as a prostitute. Chinese pirates captured her in a raid and forced her to marry a pirate captain. Despite barriers for women, she created a pirate fleet of hundreds of ships that controlled the China's coast in the early 19th C. In the interview Mr. Feign explained why he chose historical fiction rather than a biography to present the life and times of Zheng Yi Sao. His writing shows remarkable understanding of and sensitivity to women's feelings and predicament. I was also reading a recent translation of the Chinese classic, "The Romance of Three Kingdoms". Mr. Feign's style made his characters more vibrant and compelling for me.
